Selecting a Mentor

Updated: Mar 5, 2023

Choosing a mentor can be a challenging decision, given the various price brackets and unique life experiences and skills that mentors can offer. It is important to conduct thorough research to ensure you select the right mentor for you, considering several factors beyond just the cost. For instance, it would be best to determine if the mentor's values align with yours, review their online presence and video content to see if they offer good advice, and whether they focus on self-improvement or tearing others down.

You'll notice my content is just about me having a good time as a person while doing my best to uplift others. I focus on bringing positivity into the world as best as I can and helping others. Some people use their platform to trash talk other creators. You may resonate with positivity, or you may prefer a mentor with a darker world view, but what is most important is that you choose someone that fits. Keep in mind that a person who uses their platform to bring others down may attempt to do that to you in the future, as it is inherent in their character.

My video content across multiple platforms showcases consistent morals and ethics and you can see that although my hair has grown out, and I have learned how to make money in multiple ways since the beginning of my journey, my ethics have remained unchanged.

Furthermore, it is crucial to evaluate a mentor's behavior professionally, their spiritual beliefs, and whether they have a nurturing or critical attitude. As you search for the right mentor, you must use your intuition and discretion to identify those who are genuinely helpful and avoid those looking to profit from your misfortune. Many of the people that I have helped have come from other mentors who they felt took advantage of them. Some of them were blocked by their mentor after purchasing services. Others paid for services only to be double charged before the service was even received.

Before choosing your mentor, you can check any credentials they claim to have on LinkedIn and Google, or even purchase a background check online. If a mentor is charging you a significant amount of money, it is advisable to do a background check to avoid being scammed. For instance, you can check if they hold the licenses and certifications they may claim to have, and you can even check with their state to ensure their license is up-to-date.

You can also find relevant job experience and find out pretty quickly if this person has been honest and authentic, or misleading. (A licensed psychologist for example, would require a PHD in psychology and would have a medical facility where they practiced on their records.) This can give you an insight into how they offer assistance to clients, and if this person is reliable, reputable, and genuine.

You can also see the life experience and skill set they offer. If you were to run a background check on me, you'd find I have no arrests, and a healthy resume. I've never claimed to have licenses or certifications, as I wasn't willing to go into debt for college, although I did attend after winning several grants and scholarships. I believe in affordable, accessible, education, but you can also see how that did not prevent me from gaining applicable real world experience. You would find that I have been an avid reader and researcher for the majority of my life and that I greatly enjoy learning. I have been starting up companies for clients since 2013 and have been an educator even longer. I have been paid to take college courses for absent students. You'd find that the organization that ordained me is omnist and not inherently christian, as I am open minded to many theologies. You are welcome to view my job history and real-world life experience to see if I have insight to offer for you. I am completely transparent.

Remember that when choosing a mentor, you are looking for traits and skills that you admire and want to embody in your own everyday life. You should be choosing someone that is living a life you strive for, or someone who has overcome the adversity you are currently struggling with.

If you have doubts about my qualifications, you can also take one of my online courses or read my free e-book to get an idea of my expertise. My online courses are affordable, and if you were considering hiring an expensive mentor, you could save a ton of time and money by trying out one of my courses first. I also designed all of my courses with clients in mind, compiling a library's worth of information into one curriculum. Read through my material, stock up on the books I used, as it is a wonderful showcase of my education, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
